We have
already seen how the time is divided and what is ‘Nazigai’ etc. 60 Nazhigai constitute one day. i.e., 24
hours. One should get up atleast 5 Nazhigai (2 hours) before dawn
(Suryodhayam). There is a saying ‘panca panca ushath kaale’ which means that 5
x 5 =25 Nazhigai. In others, it is the
period after dusk (suryasthamana) of
previous day. The latter part of day
consists of 30 Nazhigais (12hours) and out of which 25 nazhigais after sunset
of previous day is what is referred to above.
The last 5 nazhigais (2 hours before sunrise) is called ‘Brahmamuhurtam’. As soon as one rises form bed, he should remember his Guru first and offer mentally his obeisance to him; he should then offer his obeisance to God and the deities (Trimurtis, Sun God, the Navagrahas, etc), then to the sages, the Pitru Devatas and to the parents. He should not let the mind wander away. He will have to let it dwell on Guru-God thoughts only, for sometime at least. He is advised to have first the Darshan of Cow (Gomata) before he does anything else. After offering obeisance to the cow, he should gargle his mouth(there are counts for each type of cleaning) and then do Achmana, by sipping a little water. This Achmana is a constant practice, many times during the day, prescribed for Brahmin. It has been explained in detail in three separate postings in this blog earlier.
In this
period of 5 nazhigais one should finish washing of teeth, other back side
works, bathing in normal water and complete ‘Pratasandhyavandanam’. This is called ‘Deva yagnam’.
