After
meals a Brahmin has to read puranams and teach appropriate things for other
varnas. Again in the evening after snanam sandhyavandhanam, opasana human,
agnihothram should be done. Then other
evening poojas, vaisvadevam etc should be done and finally night tiffin. On ekadasi one has to be very strict and if
nothing is taken during the whole day it will bring more good.
Actually
the duties of Brahmin is also very difficult and strenuous as he has to follow the rules and regulations
very strictly. There is not a moment
without work. The sastras impose on him
a life of hardship and austerity, a life of utter physical and mental
discipline.
Just
like dividing time as above, the 12 hours time from sun-rise and sun-set is
divided into 5 equal parts of 2 hours and 24 minutes. i.e., 6am – 8.24am is
called Praatah-kala, 8.24AM to 10.48AM is called Sangva-kalam, 10.48AM – 1.12PM
is callend Madhyanika-kalam, 1.12PM – 3.36PM is called aparaahna-kalam, 3.36PM
– 6PM is called pradosha-kalam. ‘Pra’ means before and ‘dosham’ means
night. So ‘pradosha kalam’ is the period
before night. Shradam is to be done in aparaannakalam. Even in English ‘pre’
refers to before.
