Now many people around the world are familiar with the Namaste greeting which comes from Hinduism. It is the traditional way of greeting by all when meeting others. Some people say “Namaste” or “Namaskar” but the meaning is same. It is equivalent to the way we say “Hello” but the meaning is much deeper. It is a salute and as saying ‘I bow to you’. The spiritual meaning is “I rever the God in you’. The greeting is for all people younger, same age, older, even strangers. It can also be interpreted as ‘ Na Ma’ which means not mine and has a spiritual significance of negating our ego in the presence of another.
The spiritual meaning is still deeper. Hindusim believe that the Lord is everything and in everything. That is the Lord is in me is the same in all. We salute with palms together near the chest and bow down our head. This symbolically praying the Lord in the heart of the other and recognizing the oneness. Some also add “Hari Om’, ‘Jai Ram’, ‘Jai Krishna’, etc as they feel the God is living in the other person’s heart also. It is to create mutual love and respect.
